Most vets will recommend a quarantine of not less than 30 days. Some say 60 (or even 90!) is better. However, there are always circumstances that have to be brought into consideration. For instance, if your new bird was from the same breeder as your current bird (ie, from the same source and no exposure to outside birds), then after a thorough vet check and clean bill of health from a qualified avian vet, you don't really need to do much by way of quarantine. Another exception might be similar to what my husband and I are experiencing right now ... we have 3 birds currently, and just bought a new little parrotlet from a pet store. He was barely 6 weeks old when we brought him home, but into quarantine he went. He got all the tests done by the vet, and except for a bit of a respiratory infection and possible vitamin A deficiency, he was pretty much fine. We did the 30 days with him, and then even though he was still finishing off his meds for his sneezing, we decided to break the quarantine. This is because he is so young. He is in the most impressionable stage of his life. If he is to be expected to get along well in a multi-bird household, and know his place in the flock dynamic, this is the time you want to imprint this on him. If I segregated him for too long, I miss those very impressionable first months. So although we probably should have quarantined longer given his infection, and the fact that he was from a pet store (and I definitely WOULD have gone longer if he was an older bird, like our Normee who we got when he was 2 1/2 years old, we quarantined him for 60 days), I broke the quarantine and just tried hard to avoid bird-to-bird contact between him and our current flock at least until he gets over his sneezing. But at least his cage is in the same room as everyone else's now. He sees and hears everything, he's getting used to the environment and the neighbours.

Quarantine is important because you want to protect your current flock members from anything the new bird may bring in. But it also works the opposite way. A new bird can become infected by something from your existing bird(s). Something the existing flock might have become immune to. Every environment has different bacteria. A bird existing in environment 'A' will become used to the bacteria that is there and build up a resistance. A new bird may never have had exposure to that particular bacteria, and so will fall ill.

A bird in a new environment is under stress. Stress can cause otherwise healthy birds to fall ill to things they normally would not. It is generally believed that MOST problems will show up within that 30 day window, and so that is why a minimum of 30 days is recommended.

It is important to get your new bird vet checked. But it is also important that your existing birds have had regular vet checks and that you know FOR SURE they are not ill (or carriers of anything). If Bosco was recently ill, and if he was not brought to a vet, how do you know what made him ill? How do you know he's completely recovered and not spreading 'birdie cooties', LOL? He might be on the road to recovery, but whatever made him ill may still be in the environment and even though he will now have an immunity to it, the newcomer will not. Certain illnesses require the environment to be disinfected to be sure it does not linger. We had an occurrence of Chlamydia, and the vet said this will linger on surfaces for up to a few months, so we had to disinfect regularly throughout the treatment, and afterwards, to be sure there was none left in the environment to reinfect our birds.

Budgies are known carriers of Polyoma virus, or so I've been told. A test for that should be done. Bosco may not have it, or be a carrier, but what if your new one is? Do you want to take that chance? Chlamydia is an important test to do if your new bird comes from an environment where he/she had contact with a lot of other birds. Pet stores are lousy examples of quarantine practice and disease can easily spread in places like that. It's so important to know you aren't bringing anything in that might harm Bosco. If Bosco was recently ill, his immune system may still be somewhat depressed and that makes him more susceptible to anything 'bad' coming into his environment.

A proper quarantine means no shared air space. If you have a furnace or central air conditioner running, this will not be possible no matter if the new one is at the far end of the house, LOL! But we do the best we can. Always change your clothes when going to care for the new one, and then again afterwards (we left a change of clothing in the 'quarantine room', only to be worn in that room). Disinfect your hands before going into the room and when coming out. Keep food and water dishes separate and wash separately. Until a vet can confirm through tests that it LOOKS AS IF he is ok, I would practice very strict measures. Even showering immediately after being in the quarantine room would not be over doing it. Afterall, better safe than sorry. I know budgies are pretty cheap (and I don't mean this in a bad way), but I think those folks who pay $1000's for their birds are a lot more picky when it comes to proper quarantine than someone who paid $15 or $20 for a budgie, but as anyone on this list will agree, they are all special little guys, each one unique, and each one deserving of the same kind of care and attention as the birds worth many times their price.
